Getting new emojis on Mac

To enjoy the new emojis on your Mac, the first thing you need to do is to upgrade it to the new version i.e. OS X 10.11.1 EI Captain. Once you have upgraded, follow the steps mentioned below.

  1. Open any text field. Then press Control ^, Command and Space; all at the same time. Or else you can simply go to 'Edit' and then click on 'Emoji& Symbols'.
  2. Any of the above-mentioned methods will make an emoji insertion palette appear on the screen. Now choose any emoji that you would like to have and click on it. This will insert the emoji at the location of your cursor.
  3. To view all the emojis use the scroll bar and scroll up and down the list to find emojis of your choice. If you want to view emojis of any other category then check out the bottom of the palette. There you will find a list of categories. Choose the category you are interested in viewing them.
  4. The best feature of the new emojis is that some of them are present in a variety of skin tones. Not just one or two skin tones, there are even 4 to 5 skin tones available. To see them click on an emoji in the 'Smileys & People' category, then hold it and soon a number of skin tones of the same emoji will appear. Choose the skin tone of the emoji of your choice and then release. This will insert that particular skin tone emoji into the location of your cursor.

2. An emoji insertion palette will appear. Click any emoji to insert it at the location of your cursor.

3. If you want to see more emojis, either scroll up and down the list, or click another category listed at the bottom of the palette.

4. Tip: If you click-and-hold on some emojis, you get a choice of skin tone. Release on the skin tone of your choice:

Note: Only some emojis are enabled for diverse skin tones. This is mostly the human-looking characters. Families and emojis with more than a single person do not support skin tone modifiers.

Create a palette

To insert more than one emoji without the picker disappearing each time, you need to turn the picker into a palette.

Drag and drop any of the empty space in the emoji picker interface to create a floating emoji palette. This can be placed anywhere on your screen, and closed by clicking the X close button.
